Most pipers remove the chanter when putting their bagpipes away. Although this is standard bagpipe maintenance, it allows the fragile reed to dry out, making a reed protector indispensible. To protect the reed, simply put this protector over the reed end of the chanter and turn the knob to tighten. The reduced air flow prevents the reed from drying out and splitting, which means each reed will last longer.
