Scotweb’s MD, Dr Nicholas J Fiddes, has written a free illustrated e-book, as a gift to help kilt lovers everywhere. In simple non-technical language it covers every aspect of buying a kilt, choosing your tartan, and accessorising an outfit for every occasion.
As a Governor of the Scottish Tartans Authority, and founder of the world’s first company to market kilts on the Internet (yes, Scotweb) no one is better qualified to offer such advice. Impartial and objective, this is a personal work and is not a Scotweb publication.
Magnificent! I have long said that when I become Emperor of the World, I will decree that all men wear full Highland dress at all times! Sadly however, I myself had been unable to find a family tartan until the Welsh developed one a couple of years ago. (I still cannot locate tartans for the three remaining family names on my Irish immigrant parents’ sides; perhaps this will ultimately change as new patterns are registered.)
My new kilt (aka cilt) is the heavyweight, 8-yard woollen garment. The pleats (to sett) are a full finger in depth, and the colours are rich and elegant. The two large rear kilt belt loops are practically invisible. The garment is lined along the top, and finished with three sturdy leather straps and buckles. In my case, there is a beautiful Welsh dragon embroidered at the outer apron. I thought I would need to have the kilt pressed right away, but its weight alone has allowed the kilt to lose any postage wrinkles!
One question I would like to pose of other readers concerns waistline: Not that of the kilt, by my own! Like many men in my age group (late 40s), I am fighting (well, losing) a battle of the bulge. In the (unlikely) event that I ever do drop 10 kg, I am wondering, how easily can the kilt be reduced in waist size? Would it just be a matter of finding a Scots tailor to move the straps? Any advice would be appreciated!
By the way, if you are considering your first kilt, then I say: Go for it! This article of clothing looks powerful, masculine, and classy.

I couldn't be more pleased with the quality in the craftsmenship put into making this kilt! In addition, the color of the tartan is even more beautiful in person than on the internet. I can't wait to see my future husband waiting for me on our wedding day! Thank you Scotweb!!
